Dr. Grace Carlson
A leading expert in satellite geodesy, Dr. Carlson co-leads the development of WaterAI to translate complex geodetic data into actionable insights for communities facing acute water and climate stress.
My Story
Dr. Grace Carlson is a scientific advisor at TerraIntel, where she co-leads the development of WaterAI, an environmental intelligence platform designed to translate satellite geodetic information into actionable insights on water security and land stability for governments, industries, and communities facing acute climate and water stress.
After receiving her Ph.D. in Geosciences from Virginia Tech, Dr. Carlson went on to serve as a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, and now holds a faculty position in the Geography Department at Indiana University. With a decade of research experience, Dr. Carlson has emerged as a leading expert in satellite geodesy applied to water security challenges. She is uniquely recognized for pioneering novel strategies to resolve complex water depletion signals using multi-satellite data integration.
Over her research career, Dr. Carlson has authored or co-authored more than 15 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, including Nature Water, Nature Cities, and Remote Sensing of Environment. She has secured competitive research funding from NASA and state-level agencies and has been invited to speak at numerous international conferences and workshops.
At TerraIntel, Dr. Carlson combines rigorous scientific methodology with practical problem-solving to develop tools that bridge the gap between Earth observation science and operational decision-making. Through WaterAI and collaborative research initiatives, she is committed to helping societies better understand and manage water resources and geophysical hazards in an era of rapid environmental change and increasing climate uncertainty.
